Are you having a laugh? Exploring human coach distinctiveness in an age of AI: An IPA study of the role of humour in coaching

Abstract
This study investigates the role of humour in the coaching process and its impact on both the coach-client relationship and its role as a differentiator between human coaching and AI coaching agents (AI coachbots). The research used semi-structured interviews with experienced coaches. It identified six interlinked themes: (i) Humour and trust, (ii) Timing (iii) Humour as a catalyst, (iv) Humour as a tension reliever, (v) Risks (vi) Alignment. The paper offers practical insights for coaches as to how and when humour may support their work.
